Acid Jazz

Acid Jazz Records started in 1987 by Eddie Piller with the help of Gilles Peterson. Acid Jazz has constantly championed new talent in the funk, soul and mod arenas. At the time the label was so unique that the genre it championed was named after the record label by Style Magazines ID editor John Godfrey. Releasing the first recordings by The Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai, D-Influence as well as many others whilst also rediscovering classic artists such as Terry Callier and Gregory Isaacs. In recent years the label has been working with new talent including Matt Berry and New Street Adventure. The label will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2018.

    Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson establish their new label Acid Jazz Records releasing their first record by Galliano.

  • 1989

    Acid Jazz tracked down and relaunched the career of seminal folk/soul singer Terry Callier.

  • 1990

    Now in sole control of the label Eddie Piller releases the debut album by The Brand New Heavies which spends a year on the US R&B charts with 4 top 40 UK hits.

  • 1991

    Label discovers and signs Jamiroquai.

  • 1992

    Piller and label partner Dean Rudland compile the genre defining compilation ‘Blue Breaks and Beats’.

  • 1994

    Label opens groundbreaking club ‘The Bluenote’ in Hoxton Square.

  • 1995

    Sign Gregory Isaacs who headlines that years Notting Hill Carnival.

  • 1997

    Acid Jazz Totally Wired compilation series sells it millionth copy.

  • 2000

    The Bluenote wins Timeout ‘club of the millennium’

  • 2007

    Acid Jazz back in the top 40 with Andy Lewis & Paul Weller’s modern northern soul classic ‘Are You Trying To Be Lonely’.

  • 2011

    Label signs Matt Berry.

  • 2012

    Acid Jazz celebrates its 25th anniversary.
